Getting Up The Nerve To Start Your Home Improvement Project by Donald Thomas

Getting up the nerve to begin your home improvement project can be exasperating to say the least. One moment you're gung-ho and ready to tackle the job...the next minute you're almost suffering from anxiety attacks.

But you shouldn't allow these roller coaster feelings to continue to prevent you from doing what you really want to do. And besides, after almost a quarter of a century as a home improvement contractor, I sometimes still get these same feelings.

It remind me of the butterflies I would get just before kick-off, when I played football back in the day. But after my first hit, I was alright the rest of the game. And it sometimes happen that way today in the home improvement business. At the inception of a project I can get kind of nervous and excited, but as the project continues I begin to relax and settle down.

So if you are having uneasy feelings and doubting yourself, just put your foot down and make a commitment to start the job immediately and do it. Don't get caught up worrying about making mistakes because mistakes are really nothing more than growing pains. That's right. We all are human and we all make mistakes, but you can profit from your mistakes and turn those bloopers into building blocks.

Never give up on yourself before you even give it a try. First, take the necessary time to get all the information you can from as many reputable sources available and immerse yourself in it. Try to obtain all the knowledge you can about whatever task you will be performing and prepare to follow those instructions completely.

It's only natural if you're feeling apprehensive about doing work around the house that you are uncomfortable tackling... and its quite understandable to have reservations; but if you are of a sound mind and reasonably healthy there are a number of projects around the house you just might be able to do...and  quite well thank you. Let's take a look at prehaps some possibilities.

1.Interior Painting: Your home has walls and ceilings, as well as trim and doors. At some point they will all need to be repainted. This is a golden opportunity for you to step in and do the job yourself. Just apply yourself and commit to the project and be astounded at what you can do.

2. Flooring: When it comes to flooring there are many homeowners who would rather leave this to the contractors, but contractors just like you had to start somewhere; so don't be discourage, and give it the old college try...you can do it. If you have some type of sickness, be it mental, physical or psycological that actually prevent you from doing home improvement projects, then by all means, please call a contractor to do it for you. But if you able to do it yourself---why not?

3.Drywall Repair: Eventually every home will need to have walls and ceilings repaired at some time or another. Sooner or later you will notice that there are cracks, stress lines and maybe even small holes in your walls/ceilings. And instead of hiring a contractor to fix them you can do this yourself. Repairing drywall(sheetrock) is not a difficult  thing to do at all. All you need is a good guide to show you how its done. That's all. You will be surprised at how well you did it.

4.Painting Your Kitchen Cabinets : Buckle your seat belts because this is something you can do too! In fact, you might be able to give your entire kitchen a partial make over. From wallpaper removal, drywall repair, cabinet painting, and even flooring installation, you might very well be able to do it---elegantly.

5. Staying The Course: Rememeber, even if the outcome is less than perfect you still are to be commended for over coming your fears and going forward with your project. And you are the better for it too. Let this be a spring board for future references. No matter the outcome you really have succeeded and deserves to be congratulated for it.

6. Painting your Kitchen ceiling and walls
: Your kitchen's ceiling and walls can be given a clean and fresh appearance simply by given them a fresh coat of paint. Stained up ceilings and dingy walls can easily be transformed into  clean and  attractive surfaces. No longer must you endure the unsightliness of unclean walls and ceiling in your kitchen, and the great part about it all is that in most cases you can do it yourself.

7. Painting Your Closets
: Although most closets are pretty much hidden from view, at least the inside of it is; that's still no reason to have to endure walls that are dirty and in need of a paint job. Yes, your closet walls are not exempt from enduring much of the same abuse as other rooms in your home, which means, in time they to will need to be addressed as well as other rooms in your home that experience a lot more wear and tear.

So now is a good time to remove all the content in them and give the old closets a good thorough cleaning, followed by a good paint job, and believe me you can't go wrong that way at all. Your closets will look so much better and you will thank yourself for it later, and oh by the way, how about donating some of those shoes and clothes that you no longer need, there are charities that will be glad to come and take them off your hands at no charge whatsoever, and it might even be tax deductible at that.

8. Exterior Pressure Washing
: Take a good look at your the exterior of your home when you are driving up and see what other people see when they are passing by. After working in the yard and making it beautiful how about turning to the exterior of your home. A good cleaning can remove mold, mildew and dirt from your house surfaces. Pressure washing is an ideal way to get the job done, and while you're at it, why not go on and clean the driveway, garage, patio and the front porch. Your house will really look 100% better after a good thorough cleaning.

9. Exterior House Repair
: If there are rotten boards on your house now is a good time to remove them and install new ones. After the wood has completely dried, then it is time to inspect for damaged wood. Replace damaged wood immediately and prime and paint to match. If you have missing mortar between your bricks, now is a good time to take care of that as well. If you are uncomfortable doing these things then call a local reputable contractor to help you out.

10. Exterior House Painting
: After pressure washing and repairing/replacing damaged wood, if you deem that your house really need a complete paint job--then go for it. Get all the information you can on how to do the job correctly then proceed with all the zeal in the world, but always be cautious and work safely. Giving your exterior a quality paint job is the single most important thing you can do to enhance your exterior. It will not only give you an attractive looking house but it will also help increase the value of your home...it doesn't get much better than that.

Conclusion: In conclusion, I just want to say that there are so many home improvement projects around the house that can be done by most homeowners. It's important that you first obtain as much information about a particular task as you possibly can, and in most cases there is no better place to look than the internet. A wealth of information about practically anything you want to know about is available at the click of a mouse; so dig in and find out what you need to know and just have at it.

There are many forums on line that can help you tackle just about any problem you might have, and don't forget your local contractors who, I'm sure, won't hesitate to give you a few free pointers to help you along your merry way...I know I wouldn't. So good luck to you and I only wish you the very best.
