Exterior Painting: Giving New Meaning To The Words "Curb Appeal" in Shreveport and Bossier City, La.

by Donald Thomas
The exterior of your home makes such a profound and indelible impression that's speak ever so loudly and clearly. It's true, the exterior of your home has a voice that calls out to each and every person that looks its way, and you can be sure they listen intently.

That's why it is so important to keep the exterior (as well as the interior) of your home looking great at all times if it is possible. Today in these troubling economic times homeowners are reeling back and forth from the instability of the economy. Unemployment is back on the rise; goods and services continue to increase, and the  uncertainty of employment looms overhead  for many homeowners each and every day. Saving a little money here and there seems to be the only hedge against sudden disaster in many of their minds.

Practically everyone has had to make some cutbacks along the way just to stay afloat, and many services that was once taken for granted has been altogether disregarded now that money is in short supply and the prospect of finding a gold mine isn't very promising.

However, one of the most surest ways of losing money and losing it fast in an attempt to save money is neglecting the exterior of your home. There are those who are of the mindset that buying a home "is not" an investment. But I beg to differ; not only is it an investment but it is a large investment that can increase in its value or decrease in its value. Homeowners have very little power when it comes to controlling the real estate market but they do have the power to see that their home is well maintained and looking its best at all times--year round.

For homeowners to neglect to do the needed repairs and upgrades necessary to keep their homes looking great is not a wise decision at all; in fact, neglecting the upkeep of their home is a guaranteed formula for financial disaster...and here's why: Timely repairs save money, and in some cases a lot of money can be saved simply by attending to problems before they become major repairs and/or replacement is needed; not to mention the increase in cost of energy bills due to lost energy.

For example, rotten and damaged soffit and fascia boards not only look bad but can result in extensive damaged if not repaired and painted quickly. Rot spreads and encompasses wood that surrounds it, if left unchecked a small repair project like that could turn into a major project costing thousands of dollars in avoidable repairs. Exterior wood left uncoated or unpainted for a period of time is also left unprotected. You see, paint not only has aesthetic appeal but it has a much more functional role as well. It acts as a protective covering for your substrate or in this particular case wood.

Insect infestation; birds (woodpeckers) drumming holes into your wood; wasps and bees drilling holes through your wood are just some of foes that will exploit the opportunity to help damage/destroy your home if it is not properly maintained and cared for. You can quickly see the importance of making the sacrifice even in a financially tight situation. Your home is subjected and exposed to so much that can cause considerable damage.

There are four seasons in a year and each season brings its own blessings as well as its own perils. Winters in Shreveport are mild for the most part, although there are a few really cold days and nights but on average winter here is not like winter  up and down the east coast. But even here with winter comes the rainy season that can help destroy wood left unpainted and unprotected.

Wood that is uncoated will absorb water that in turn will cause the wood to rot prematurely. Cold weather will most certainly result in increased energy bills if the exterior of your home is not properly maintained to help keep the cold out and the warmness in.

Spring and summer are just the opposite of winter (and autumn) but the end results can be just as devastating as in winter. Spring rains as well as heighten insect activity can certainly lead to more house repairs, not to mention the searing heat and humidity that comes with summer. Getting the exterior of your home repaired and painted is just plain smart. Hiring an exterior painting contractor as well as a carpenter may cost you some money upfront but over the long run it will most certainly save you thousands.

In Shreveport and Bossier City, La. there are some good exterior painting contractors that offer homeowners complete service; that is, they provide quality carpentry repairs and upgrades as well as quality paint jobs. Spending money with them is really saving money for you and your family and at the same time giving your home that beautiful and elegant "curb appeal" that just cannot be denied.
