Plaster
Restoration and
Repair Service in Shreveport/Bossier City/Minden, La. and surrounding
areas.
Who
can dispute the beauty and elegance of plaster
walls and ceilings when they are
in good condition and well maintained? Who? I for one have always found
plaster walls and ceilings to be regal and noble in appearance as
opposed to the utilitarian worth of common drywall. Drywall
serves its purpose true enough but when it comes to elegance and beauty
no other wall/ceiling covering comes remotely close to the grace and
charm that plaster walls/ceilings exude. Throughout the milleniums plaster walls
and ceilings as well as plaster
ornamental trim have adorned magnificent castles, cathedrals, buildings
and the homes of the rich and famous.
However, as durable as plaster
is
it can be susceptible to stress
cracks, crevices, small holes and even large holes.
Once the plaster has broken away from its keys that are located behind
the lath its not uncommon for the plaster
to
fall to the floor with the
possibility of doing great harm. Over a period of time like most
everything else, plaster too will need repairs ranging from the
superficial to complete restoration and when that time comes be sure to
give American
Painting and Pressure Cleaning, Inc.
a call.

Plaster: An
Enduring Legacy That Still Lives On Today
It
is believed by some historians that primitive man used plaster as a
protective covering for his shelter 9,000 years ago and it is also
believed by some of their counterparts throughout Europe and parts of
Japan that plaster use dates back as much as 11,000 years ago when
Europeans would use plaster as a floor covering.
The Greeks used
plaster in their architectural
designs that dates back
about 500 years before Christ which equals to about 2500 years ago in
my calculations, but whether or not these dates are accurate or
incurate one thing is for sure plaster predates any of the finishes we
are familiar with in modern times.
The Egyptians are known for using plaster in the palaces of the great
Pharoahs and also for a finish in the building of the pyramids. And of
course most of us are famaliar with the paintings of Michealangelo on
the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel where he painted over slightly wet
plaster we're told.
It can easily be seen that plaster
finishes
have adorned some of the most famous buildings and homes for many, many
milleniums and although today it is no longer the most popular finish
in commercial or residential structures; nevertheless, that fact can
never take away from the rich and storied history of plaster.
Even today plaster still play a prominent role in the interior finishes
of many elaborately constructed commercial buildings around the world,
and it still makes its presence known in high end upscale residential
structures as well. Plaster's counterpart drywall
is widely used because of its relatively inexpensive cost and the fact
that it is also very quick and easy to install; however, drywall finishing
or taping and floating the joints does require some measure of skill
and experience that usually requires the service of a skill craftsmen.
In conclusion, plaster in today's world especially in the residential
sector as a whole is almost nonexistant, but for a precious few souls
who still appreciate beautiful
and elegant walls/ceilings and ornamental trim---"drywall
is not and never will be an acceptable option". For some, drywall
in all of its utilitirian roles could never come close to duplicating
the charm and gracefulness of magnificently plastered walls and
ceilings---never!
