Going For The Gold... When It Comes To Home Improvement by Donald Thomas

In today's economy, saving a little money here and there can often times mean the difference between staying afloat or going under. And one of the ways you can manage to save some money is through doing your own home improvement projects. Oh, I'm not talking about rewiring your house or attempting to install all new pipes throughout your home, but I am talking about putting a fresh coat of paint on your walls and ceilings, as well as your doors and trim.

And those holes and cracks you see in your walls that are displeasing to you can be repaired with a little extra effort and made to look great. You don't have to be an expert or some kind of guru just to get the job done correctly, but you do need a little information and the right attitude to successfully complete the job. But before you take off, let me just give you a couple of good pointers to help you along your merry way.

First of all, you should repair those holes in the drywall (sheetrock) before you begin painting. You can purchase small do-it-yourself kits that will give you step by step instructions on how to repair your damaged drywall or you can research it on line as well. Be sure and follow directions carefully each and every step.

Once the holes have been repaired you might want to apply texture to make it blend in well with its surrounding. Generally, you can buy texture in a can, but if you have some type of non conventional texture or "home made" texture as we refer to it; you just might have to play with it a while to come up with a suitable match.

After the textured application, before painting; I recommend priming, and priming with a good latex primer is acceptable unless you have stains that could possibly leech through your finish coat of paint. If in fact you do have those kind of stains then I recommend an oil base primer/sealer like kilz. It has never failed me in almost a quarter of a century of using it. It works!

When it comes to painting I have a weakness. I simply love to paint and I don't try and hide that fact. I find great joy in painting the interior of a home. Walls, ceilings, doors and trim...I just can't seem to get enough of painting. I have been painting for a living since 1984 and I still love it even today. Now we are a full service home improvement company that does it all, but when it all started way back in '84 we offered only one service: exterior house painting and from there we grew. And although I thoroughly enjoy every phase and aspect of home repair/rebuilding, I must confess that I still love painting more than anything else. Some people hate it but I love it.

INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR  PAINTING

Your home interior and exterior makes a dynamic statement and it has a direct reflection on you and your taste. A home that is in need of maintenance and upkeep can definitely make an unflattering statement to say the least. That is why it is so important to try and keep a well maintained home as best as you can. And by you actually being able to do the work yourself can really give you an added sense of accomplishment as well as savings that could possibly amount to thousands over time.

Trying to make sure your home is always looking good and well maintain is not easy. Owning your own home  and seeing that it is always looking great takes a continuous effort on your part... and there seems to be something that is in need of attention all the time. But remember, it is better to stay on top of the situation then to  be faced with unexpected emergencies that can really cost a bundle. Painting your ceilings, walls, trim and doors and making sure they are looking great will not only help to keep the value of your home up, but it can also help to increase its value as well.

When you begin your painting project remember to follow the manufactures' instructions and always use quality tools and equipment- if applicable. Take your time and do a swell job that you will be proud of. Safety procedures should be implemented and followed at all times to avoid injury or even death. And if you are physically or mentally challenged just call a reputable contractor and let him/her do the job safely. Money isn't everything, so stay safe and I wish you nothing but the best.
