Giving Your Kitchen A Complete Makeover...And Doing It On A Low Budget At That--Rebuilding  Phase Three

Taking An Overview (of things completed)

In phase three of "Giving Your Kitchen A Complete Makeover..." series, we will be going forth with the installation of the drywall (sheetrock) and subsequently we will follow the installation of the drywall with finishing and texturing the walls and ceiling ( that will come in phase four); so take a deep breathe and let's proceed with the journey.

If the framing checked out okay, and if there were any studs, ceiling joist, sole plates; or any other wood in the kitchen area that needed replacing, I'm assuming the problem has been properly addressed and taken care of. And if you chose to install fiberglass batts for your insulation they should be in place at this point, or if you chose to use "spray foam' insulation that should be completed by now. And of course it suffice to say that if you had any mechanical (electrical, plumbing, heating/air/ventilation) problems you contacted a licensed contractor who rectified the situation and once finished  waved goodbye.

Now begins the fun stuff, that is, if you like working with drywall (sheetrock) and all the joy that can bring. To some people I might sound a little corny, but I love working with this stuff. I know there are far more important jobs in the world to do than this, and I know there are some very smart people in the world that do those jobs; but as for me I love this type of work and I'm not ashamed to say it. Each and every day that I'm fortunate enough to have work to do I count it as a blessing, because being able to do the type of work you love is really something to feel good about. Now, with that said let's get back on track and the wheels moving again.

Take a moment to look around your kitchen and observe your headers, cripples, king studs, jack studs and even your rafters overhead. Take a good look at your insulation that's there, unless you plan to spray cellulose...and that can only be blown/sprayed when the drywall has been installed. Assuming that you went ahead and installed your insulation, or you chose to hire a contractor to do it; we'll move forward with the understanding that the job has been done.

Installing Drywall(sheetrock) In Your Kitchen

Once upon a time installing (hanging) drywall could only be accomplished by the strong and mighty...especially when it came to installing drywall overhead. But today times are different and even my wife (bless her soul) has become a very good drywall installer who is extremely meticulous about the way she installs it...and she holds everybody to that standard! My point is this: you don't have to be Hercules to do a great job of installing drywall; instead, all you need is the patience to do it correctly, the right equipment... and an eye for detail. In the article " How To Install Drywall..." I gave a step by step guide on how a novice can install drywall and do a real good job--the first time. Please feel free to click on the link if you like and pick up on a few pointers on how it's done. I won't offer a tutorial here on how to install it, but you're more than welcome to click on the link; also, there is an abundance of material on line that can help you with the drywall installation as well. So be encouraged if you are a novice because help is readily available to assist you every step of the way.

Just allow me a moment to say this--when it comes to installing drywall I like to start with the ceiling and then I install the drywall (panels) on the walls.. The key here is to take your time and be patient and work methodically; that is, develop a system that will help you work in a logical and systematic way. When working with drywall tools and equipment remember to work safely and try to avoid any injuries to yourself and those that are working beside you. Keep in mind that you're working in close quarters so be conscious of those that are working nearby.

A novice is very capable of doing an excellent job when it comes to installing drywall. You don't have to be a space scientist to do this type of work, but you do need to employ common sense and work in a smart and logical way to achieve success. Allow this project to be an open laboratory for you and mentally notate everything so that you can become an even better installer as time goes on.

Conclusion

Now that you have completed the drywall installation in your kitchen you should give yourself one big pat on the back, because you deserve it and you have earned your stripes. So go ahead and kick back for while before you head on out to the grill and start grilling some steaks...man, life is good! And oh yea, how about popping the top on a six pack of ice cold coke. Wow! it just doesn't get much better than this. And don't forget to invite the neighbors, maybe some of them will even stick around after dinner and help you get this kitchen done.Good luck.
