DRYWALL: It's
Unique Application
In Residential Settings In Today's World.
Prior
to the ending of World War II plaster was the interior finish that
adorned most walls and ceilings in homes all across America. Plaster
had an extremely long and proud heritage that could be traced back over
eleven thousand years. The Egyptian Pyramids, Sistine Chapel,
cathedrals, palaces, castles, commercial buildings, and many,
many homes
of the rich and famous had
plaster walls and
ceilings, and more often
than not ornamental trim that graced the walls and ceilings
as well, giving a breathtaking and elegant look that proved to
be timeless---well, almost. Artists like the great Michealangelo
painted masterpieces on the ceilings of chapels and cathedrals that was
covered
with plaster
(wet
plaster in particular). Plaster
has a rich and noble history to say the least but
it has proven to be less than ideal for many modern day applications.
After the end of World War II many soldiers began to return home; back
to America they came with their heads held high, and the United States
government wanted to make good on the
promises they (congress and then president Harry S. Truman) had made to
the returning GIs who had fought so gallantly
in World War II and in many different theaters around the world.
One of
those promises was to provide federally backed loans
for housing for returning soldiers and their families, and with
that commitment came an honest effort by the federal government to do
just that...and for the most part they made good on that promise.
Drywall: The solution to a huge problem
And the race was on to provide quality housing for the veterans of
World War II
and their families. All across America from one end to the other
massive home building projects begin to cover the country's landscape.
Large tracts of land outside major cities and metropolitan areas was
being turned from barren property to lush green lawns practically
overnight. At about the same time America's love with the automoble was
beginning to crescendo into a love affair that would last a lifetime,
and with the ecomony showing stronger signs of recovery after the
war---automobiles that had been priced out of range for most
working class people
became more and more affordable, thus the American dream was about to
take off like a
P-39 Airacobra going into
combat.
Unbelieveable!
With the mass purchases of automobiles Americans now had their
own transportation to take them to and from their homes in the newly
built surburbs to their jobs back in the city---life was good, but in
order for builders to even try to come close to keeping up way the
over demand for more housing there needed to be a better and more
efficient
product and method for installing interior finishes on the walls and
ceilings.
Drywall Reintroduction
Although it's true drywall made is debut originally back in the 1920s
it really didn't catch on until after the unprecedented home building
efforts that was in full throttle in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
With
the housing industry suffering from a terrible backlog due to the slow
installation and drying time of plaster the building industry was
poised for a much better alternative and this is where drywall makes it
second appearance as an interior wall/ceiling finish that had all the
qualities
that most architects, structural engineers, builders, contractors,
designers,
financers, and even the public at large appreciated.
Once the reintroduction of drywall in the residential building market
was done
there would be no turning back. It was well received by
practically everyone especially the home buying public who was now
seeing
the increased production of homes being built all around them and this
proved to be a sealing point when it came to doubters who felt that
drywall was an inferior product in comparison to plaster.
Drywall Installation
Drywall
panels proved to be much easier
to install than plaster and the skill needed to install drywall as
opposed to plaster was far less demanding and could be installed by
laborers compared to plasterers who would need to undergo an
appencticeship that lasted five years and sometimes more in order to
become a competent plasterer.
Drywall
Finishing
Finishing
drywall or
sheetrock which is actually a trade name is quite another matter.
Unlike installing drywall panels or drywall board/gypsum board as it is
sometimes called; sheetrock finishing is a highly skilled craft that
takes time to properly execute to achieve desireable results. However,
at the same time most people who want to learn how to finish drywall
can become competent enough to do so with the proper training and the
necessary practice to enhance their abilities and techniques. Drywall
finishing is really an art form that is as individualistic as artists
who incorporate different methods and styles in the way they approach
their
work. No two people finish drywall exactly alike but all finishers
share common traits and fundamentals that are integral to good drywall
finishing.
Drywall has proven to be the antidote to plaster since its wide spread
usage that begin back in the mid 20th century. Today over 95% of
residential homes have drywall ceilings and walls. No other interior
wall/ceiling finish comes remotely close to it as the choice of
architects, builders, contractors and homeowners for sure, but with all
the raves and positive reviews there are a few downers that are closely
associated with drywall that initially didn't phase too many homeowners
but over time proved to be a distrubing concern that would cry out for
a solution that wasn't so expensive.
Drywall
Repairs
Elated with
the new and improved drywall many homeowners felt that all their
problems were practically over when it came to the interior wall and
ceiling finish for their newly built homes; however, they soon came
face to face with the harsh reality that although drywall had proven to
be just what the doctor ordered as opposed to plaster walls and
ceilings, but there were some cloaked problems that would soon come to
haunt
them.
Plaster dries hard and it can take a pounding without so much as
showing a dent but drywall proved to be just the opposite in that it
could be busted, kicked in, dented and even knocked completely
through---by kids no less! And to make matters worse unlike its
predeccessor
plaster; drywall was hightly susceptible to water damage
over or even light
moisture over a period of time. In essence, drywall would require a lot
of repairs in the
course of it lifetime as a residential finish for walls and ceilings.
This unexpectant expense proved to be an alarming turn-off for many
homeowners.
Many resorted to doing their own drywall
repairs
but for the most part their drywall repair work looked troubling to say
the least., and others
who could afford hiring a drywall repair contractor often complained of
the high cost of hiring a contractor everytime there was a
hole or crack in their walls or ceilings. Just trying to keep their
walls and ceilings looking great proved to be a daunting task for many
homeowners.
Conclusion
Today, homeowners unlike in earlier times have ascess to the
"Internet". Over the internet billions of bits of information is just a
click away. Subjects that are so wide and varied until almost any
subject matter can be ascessed over the internet and that includes "How To Repair
Damaged Drywall/Sheetrock".
Videos, tutorials, and articles written to help anyone and
everyone that is interested in learning how to do any and all types of
drywall wor is readily available. And in addition to that there are a
large number of
contractors and the information needed to contact them about giving a
bid to do your drywall repair work if you decide you rather let someone
else do it for you.
Yes, times are so different today and better I might add when it comes
to repairs and upgrades to your home. If you decide to do them yourself
just make sure you do your homework thoroughly and get all the
information available to help you do a real quality job; if you decide
to take it easy and hire a contractor that too is a workable solution
that should work for you as well, just be careful and do your
interviewing and background check with the contractors you decide to
consult with.
As always in closing we only want to wish you the very
best...and we want to take this time and send a very special thanks out
to all the men and women who gave their lives and those who
put their lives on the line during World War II. Here's wishing you
guys the best in your retirement, and again, thanks for everything.
Good luck
with your home improvement project(s).
